Since the first Merseyside Assemblies chapels, Merseyside Christian Youth Camps now has over fifty partnering churches from at least six denominations.
In 1945 a group of men led by Bill Buckley from the Merseyside Assemblies held the first boys’ camp at Abergele in North Wales. Separate boy’s and girls’ camps were held the next year and this started an annual Summer Camp held at numerous sites in North Wales and the Lake District.
By 1950 some of the original 1945 campers had become leaders and the feeling that camp was special was growing fast. In 1963 a permanent home was needed and Tyn-y-nant, a small cottage on 6.5 acres, was purchased with a further 3 acres acquired in 1990. Large numbers of volunteers then built wooden chalets and other buildings; and, over the years, hundreds of volunteers have put thousands of hours into building and digging and painting and building some more.
In 2006 a significant redevelopment of the kitchen was undertaken and at the end of 2009 the girls’ chalets were demolished and four superb new units with en suite facilities and under-floor heating were started. Two were completed for the 2010 Summer and the final two will be completed for Spring 2011.
